Programmable Automation Controller’s (PACs) play an important role for CPU-heavy control tasks. Advantech’s PACs are designed with time-deterministic logic, motion, and process control. The ADAM-5550KW is one of Advantech’s PACs with many features and easy-to-use solutions.

The ADAM-5550KW is a Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) designed for control tasks that require the features of both PLCs and Industrial PCs. The ADAM-5550KW utilizes the AMD Geode GX533 CPU along with control specific features such as a watchdog timer, battery backup RAM, and deterministic I/O. The ADAM-5550KW combines IEC61131-3 programming languages and Windows CE 5.0 allowing users to develop strategies using a familiar programming language.

The ADAM-5550KW has a list of useful I/O capabilities, including a local VGA port for convenient HMI functionality, two Ethernet ports and two USB ports as well as comprehensive software. The ADAM-5550KW can serve multiple domains and can handle complex requirements, high speed analog measurement, multiple programs with different cycle times, open communication functions, and enterprise-level network integration.

Furthermore, the ADAM-5550KW has been specifically designed to handle distributed motion control functions with PLC open-complaint motion function blocks.According to Craig Resnick, Research Director, ARC Advisory Group, “PACs address the integration issues confronting OEMs and end users by extending the domain expertise of automation systems, resulting in increased return on assets, reduced lifecycle costs, and a lower total cost of ownership for manufacturers. End users, machine builders, and OEMs want fewer components in their solution and ones that contain multiple-discipline development and functionality, including logic, motion, drives, HMI, and process control on a single platform with a single programming and engineering tool for the complete system.

PACs are designed to clearly address this market demand.”
