Emerson's PlantWeb Digital Plant Architecture Expected to Increase Generating Efficiency and Reduce Maintenance Costs
AUSTIN, TX (Aug. 28, 2003) - Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR), announced today that it has won a $10 million contract from Shaanxi HanCheng Second Power Co. Ltd. to install instrumentation and control systems for the first 600-megawatt power plant in the Northwest China Shaanxi Province. The new power plant, initially consisting of two 600-megawatt coal-fired units, will be built near HanCheng City, Shaanxi Province.
The plant is needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for reliable power in the region. The project is funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The cornerstone of the project is installation of Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant architecture, an automation solution that helps increase generating efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. PlantWeb will employ Emerson's multi-network Ovation information and control system to control and monitor the plant's boilers, burner management system and plant protection system. Start up for Unit 1 is scheduled for August 2005; Unit 2 is expected to start operations in March 2006.
"This is an important project for the region, and we needed a tried-and-true control solution backed by superior technical expertise. We found both of these in Emerson," said Zhao Hechun, chief engineer of the North West Electric Power Design Institute. The Institute is a member of the China Electricity Council, and Zhao Hechun supports the Shaanxi HanCheng Second Power Company project. "The project illustrates the breadth and depth of the global Emerson organization," said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "Our resources in China, along with our global team of experts, worked together to provide the exact blend of tightly integrated control and information systems that our customer required.
We are honored to be chosen for this project." Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will implement the comprehensive $10 million contract that encompasses design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, supply, installation supervision, training and commissioning of the plant's information and control system (I&C), supervisory information system (SIS), management information system (MIS), field instrumentation and connectivity, as well as other electrical equipment and related equipment. PlantWeb digital plant architecture is an automation solution that delivers asset optimization, process control and management execution through intelligent field devices, standards and scalable platforms, and integrated modular software.
PlantWeb's Ovation system will manage 16,000 hardwired I/O points (8,000 per unit) and eight remote I/O locations. The Ovation system includes AMS predictive maintenance software that expands the benefits of PlantWeb, enabling the power generation industry to incorporate field intelligence into day-to-day operations to improve plant performance and cut costs. The AMS predictive maintenance software analyzes information transmitted to Ovation from HART intelligent field devices, including 520 Rosemount® HART transmitters supplied by Emerson. AMS provides operators with the detailed information necessary to calibrate, configure and diagnose plant equipment more efficiently.
This translates into decreased maintenance costs and can also result in lower start-up and commissioning costs and improved asset performance and process stability.
