Ten-year track record, along with negotiation of long-term agreement, makes Emerson best value for current project and potential District-wide integration in the future
PITTSBURGH (Oct. 2, 2004) — Emerson Process Management announced today that its Power & Water Solutions industry center received a $2.4 million contract from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) of southeast Virginia to upgrade the control system at its innovative VIP wastewater treatment plant in Norfolk to the Ovation® distributed control system. Ovation is an automation solution that optimizes the operations and economics of water and wastewater facilities. “We have a good track record with Emerson.
Over the course of our 10-year relationship we have installed two other Emerson control systems,” said Rick Raike, project manager for HRSD. HRSD operates nine major water treatment plants and four small plants with a combined capacity of 231 million gallons per day (MGD), plus 101 pump stations. It was HRSD’s experience with Emerson, coupled with its ability to negotiate a five-year agreement with the company for potential new systems as well as expansion and support of existing systems, that led to the decision to select the Ovation distributed control system for the VIP treatment plant. As part of this long-term agreement, HRSD has the option to have Emerson migrate or upgrade distributed control systems at numerous plants.
Ultimately, the system could be expanded to allow for district-wide integration of plants and satellite pump stations, enabling operations to be securely monitored and controlled remotely utilizing the existing LAN/WAN. We have always been able to count on Emerson to support us with the latest technologies and we believe Emerson offers the best value for the VIP project and for potential future HRSD distributed control systems,” Raike continued. “HRSD is well-regarded as a proactive leader in respect to technology and the environment,” said Doug Johnson, water/wastewater business development manager, Emerson Process Management, Power & Water Solutions.
“Emerson is pleased that a pioneering organization like HRSD is turning to Emerson’s state-of-the-art Ovation technology to help it operate its plants more efficiently, cost-effectively and securely while maintaining its environmental excellence,” he continued. At the 40 MGD VIP treatment plant, the Ovation control system will replace the original Turbitrol control system. Emerson will also provide HART-capable I/O cards for potential installation of HART intelligent field devices in the future. Integrating the distributed control system and intelligent field devices would allow plant personnel immediate access to vital data from plant analysis and measurement instrumentation which, in turn, helps assure both process quality and compliance with environmental regulations.
To minimize the impact on operations, the Ovation system will be phased into service at the VIP treatment plant during planned outages that affect limited sections of the plant. “We’re very proud of our award-winning environmental record and our reputation for cutting-edge wastewater management. We selected Emerson to deliver the state-of-the-art control technologies that will not only enable us to serve the 1.6 million people in our service area, but also keep us poised for future growth,” explained Raike.
