PHOENIX, Dec. 20, 2004 - Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced it has received a $1.3 million contract from Finnish printing house Lapin Kansa Oy to automate its printing press extension and upgrade an existing Honeywell system installed in 1987. The two systems will be fully integrated utilizing the latest automation technology. The project is scheduled for start-up in July 2005.
"Our experience using the Honeywell Printa system has been excellent," said Jorma Seurujärvi, Lapin Kansa production manager. "Thanks to Honeywell's life cycle management services, we can now benefit from the very latest system enhancements." Lapin Kansa will extend its newspaper printing press by installing a new 4Hi tower and dryer, which the new Printa system will automate. The existing system controllers will be upgraded with new, faster controllers that will boost system speed and capacity, enabling future expansions. The user interfaces will also be upgraded.
"Printers are under increasing pressure to put out high-quality newspapers that are more impressive than those of the competition, but it can be difficult to maintain impeccable print quality without negatively impacting the bottom line," said Jerry Walker, vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Honeywell Process Solutions. "The Honeywell Printa system and life cycle management services address this challenge by helping printers keep their costs low and their quality high." The Honeywell Printa system continuously monitors press operations, keeps the printer informed of job progress and provides regular maintenance reports. The press operator controls the printing press using an easy-to-read keyboard and touch screen.
By simply touching the appropriate section of the display, an operator can instantly initiate check ups and adjustments. Because Printa is an open system, interfaces easily with other information systems, including page production, layout design, production planning and maintenance.
