Feb. 17, 2004 -- National Instruments today previewed its new PCI Express-GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) controller board at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), the technology industry’s premier event for software and hardware developers. The first plug-in product in the test and measurement industry based on the emerging PCI Express bus, the PCI Express-GPIB allows engineers to take advantage of the latest PC bus technology to control instruments through GPIB." For more than 20 years, National Instruments has been a leader in bringing the latest PC technologies to test and design engineers," said Tim Dehne, NI senior vice president of research and development.

"As PCI Express gains widespread adoption, NI will offer PC-based measurement products that take advantage of its higher performance to address new applications with virtual instrumentation." PCI Express is a high-performance, low-voltage, differential, point-to-point serial interconnect that improves PCI by providing scalable bus bandwidth. For example, the simplest x1 PCI Express interface provides more than three times the bandwidth of the PCI bus, while an x16 PCI Express interface provides more than a twenty-fold improvement. PCI Express features a layered model that offers backward compatibility with existing PCI applications at the operating system level.

In addition, PCI Express provides much-needed features such as guaranteed bandwidth for demanding data acquisition applications. For more information about PCI Express, readers can visit http://digital.ni.com/express.nsf/bycode/exd7hj.
